Regular, comprehensive inspection and maintenance of the tractor unit are crucial for ensuring safe operation. Neglecting routine checks of critical components can lead to safety hazards; for instance, a leaking fuel tank could trigger a multi-vehicle rear-end collision.

 

Maintenance of Single-Axis Fifth Wheels

During routine maintenance, inspect all components of the fifth wheel, paying particular attention to the wear on the kingpin, kingpin plate, and semi-transverse shaft, and lubricate these areas. Tighten the mounting bracket bolts (replacing them if necessary) and adjust the clearance between the locking hook and the kingpin using the adjustment screw, securing it with the lock nut afterward.
When disassembling the fifth wheel for inspection, check the unit itself for cracks or severe wear. If cracks, severe wear, deformation, or excessive thinning are found, replace the unit. Inspect the locking slot using a kingpin to check the fit; if wear exceeds limits resulting in excessive clearance, repair by build-up welding and machining to specifications, or replace the locking hook, locking block, and wear ring. Check the clearance between the mounting bracket and the main body; if the fit is loose, replace the rubber elastic bushings. Inspect the locking mechanism-uncoupling and coupling should be smooth and crisp, and the safety device secure and reliable. If anomalies occur, check the locking hook tension spring and handle tension spring, as well as the safety mechanism; replace parts if spring elasticity has weakened.

 

Maintenance of Dual-Axis Fifth Wheels

In addition to the procedures performed for single-axis fifth wheels, maintenance of dual-axis fifth wheels requires attention to the following points:
Inspect the integrated transverse and longitudinal shafts. If deformation or severe wear is present, repair by build-up welding and machining to specifications or replace with new parts, ensuring the fifth wheel can pivot flexibly in both transverse and longitudinal directions and that clearances meet standards.
Inspect the transverse oscillation angle and the cushioning devices on both sides. If the transverse oscillation angle is excessive, adjust using the wedge blocks on either side; replace cushioning springs or rubber blocks if they show signs of aging.
