Choosing a dump truck is not simply about picking the truck with the biggest engine. A truck working in a quarry has different requirements from one transporting sand between a construction site and a highway.
Start With the Job
Before looking at horsepower or body size, check what the truck will actually be doing.
A 6×4 dump truck is commonly used for construction materials, sand, gravel and general transport. An 8×4 truck can be a better fit when higher carrying capacity is required and the road conditions allow it.
For muddy roads, steep slopes or loose ground, traction becomes especially important.
Horsepower Is Only One Part
A 371 HP engine can be enough for many heavy-duty transport jobs. But engine power alone doesn't tell you how the truck will perform.
The gearbox, rear axle ratio, vehicle weight and tire size all affect how the truck pulls under load. On long climbs, engine torque and the right gear ratio can make a noticeable difference.
Check the Dump Body
The cargo body should match the material.
For normal soil, sand and gravel, a standard steel body may be enough. If the truck regularly carries large rocks or other abrasive materials, a thicker and reinforced body can make more sense.
Body dimensions also matter. A taller body increases volume, but it can change the truck's balance when fully loaded.
Don't Ignore the Axles and Frame
Mining and construction trucks spend a lot of time dealing with heavy loads and uneven roads. That's why the frame, axles and suspension deserve a close look.
For example, 16-ton heavy-duty rear axles are used on many heavy-duty truck configurations. But axle capacity should always be considered together with the actual payload, road conditions and local regulations.

The same truck may perform differently in different countries.
Before buying an export truck, it is worth checking:
Road and terrain conditions
Fuel quality
Local emission requirements
Spare parts availability
Tire availability
Typical payload
Daily working hours
These details can have a bigger effect on running costs than a small difference in engine horsepower.

The better approach is to match the engine, gearbox, axles, frame, tires and dump body to the work the truck will actually do. A suitable configuration may cost a little more at the beginning, but it can help reduce unnecessary wear, downtime and maintenance costs later.
